    Wootz is the steel that started all of it. Made in southern India and Sri Lanka, shipped west in cakes, and forged into the blades that ended up carrying the Damascus name. The technique died out somewhere around the eighteenth century and people have spent the two hundred years since arguing about how it was done. The wood set into this one is box elder, stained purple.
